Southwold Community Cinema: Hamnet
Emotional historical drama explores Shakespeare’s family tragedy, artistic ambition, love, and devastating personal loss sensitively.
Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s acclaimed novel, Hamnet tells the story of William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes following the death of their son during a plague outbreak. Starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley, the film explores Shakespeare’s early marriage, his growing theatrical ambitions in London, and the emotional strain created by separation from his family in Stratford. After young Hamnet’s death, Agnes struggles with grief while Shakespeare channels personal tragedy into artistic creation. Combining historical drama with emotional intimacy, the story examines love, mourning, creativity, and memory. The screening also includes refreshments.
